Hi to all that can help !

My 2005 Caddy van (1.9 Tdi)
Broke down last thursday pm. The engine cut out and dashboard lit up like a xmas tree. i eventually got it to a spanner who says its the main fuseboard under the bonnet. Apparently there is a poor connection to the relay that controls the fuel pump etc. Then to prove his point he removed the relay, stuffed a piece of wire into 2 of the holes and the pushed the relay back in. he claimed that the extra wire would take up any slack in the connection and Kapow ! My Caddy was running again. Lol
Can anybody tell me if this is a common fault or would the purchase of a new main fuseboard (£190.73 +vat and fitting) be the ideal solution ?
    Cheers !

I have never seen one go wrong, it may be the relay command at fault. What is the engine code?

Yes, BJB makes sense. The fuel pump relay is number 449 and is under the dash inside the car. What is the number of the relay he hot wired?

That is J317, the main battery line 30 power relay for the engine electronics, fed from the battery live line and command powered from fuse 26 (5 amp) and controlled by the engine ECU. This relay has 4 pins that are used, 30 (socket 1 on the board), 87 (socket 2), 86 (socket 3) and 85 (socket 4). I presume he has jumped 1/30 to 3/86, is this the case?

He hasnt actually jumped anything, He just stuffed a piece of wire into the hole and cut it off, Then repeated it again in another hole. So he hasnt actually bridged/Shorted anything, it just made the connection in the fuseboard to the relay tighter.
To be fair, its all a bit confusing for me. I just wanted to know if this was a common fault and/or would simply replacing the very expensive fuseboard fix the problem (as it may not be the actual problem, it may be something else)
    Cheers !

You have to ask yourself why the relay plate/fuse board became faulty, it is not normal.
