Hi Guys, as a newbie to your forum i'd like some help please ?

    I've just bought a '99 1.8 non turbo mk4 Golf, lovely car but I can't engage reverse gear ?
Now i've had a look under the bonnet and there seems to be a plastic part thats broken off. It looks a bugger to replace !

Does anyone know what this part is called ?

Is there a part number ?

And is it easy to fix ?

I've attached a couple of pictures to show you what i'm babbleing about.

    Thanks for you helps guys

I think the piece that is broken is called a “driver” by VW and is part number 1J0 711 256 costing £10.16 from VW. For the 2000 model year, the design was completely changed.

It is quite quick to change as long as it isn't stuck in the ally housing, should take no more than half an hour if it comes out easily.

It was the Actuating arm that broke causing no reverse gear. It's made of plastic so was bound to brake at some point, but then again it's done work for 90,000 mls !

Mine is a '99 model and apparently by the 2000 model the problem had been rectified, typical !
