Audio Unit replacement - MP3

Hi guys just got myself a new 56 plate 1.9 tdi

Its currently has the normal cd player (not the MP3 unit)..

Can I replace this unit with other standard vw units with the MP3 option or with the CD changer (must be the genuine VW unit)?

Because ideally I want an aux lead or a sd card option…

Wondering what upgrade you guys have done on your audio system?

Hi

Unless you want extra cost in also upgrading your can gateway, you'll be limited to third party stereos (don't look great) or the first generation rcd300/500 models.

If I was you, and I've been there and done that, I would do one of two things.

1) buy an rcd500 - straight replacement and built in changer, think most of them play mp3s too. There is an rcd300 mp3 edition but offers no built in cd changer.

2) go all out and treat yourself to an mfd2 DVD nav unit. Ok, I don't think it plays mp3s but it does at least offer an aux-in solution for either iPods of MP3 players. Plus it's a decent factory nav system at its used prices nowadays.

Do not go third party. You'll regret it, radio reception will be naff, so will the dashboard!!!!!

Take care if you decide on RCD500, the first versions didn't have CD Changer integral, nor any MP3 capability. My '06 bought in '07 came with one
You can tell a RCD500 with MP3 coz it's got it on the decal
CD Changer lived in the glove box drop-down tray where your handbook goes

Whatever you get, ensure you get the security code card!

As patomlin says if you wanted to go down the rcd310/510 etc you might find you'll need a new can gateway. If you've got access to VCDS get a scan done and it'll tell you the part number of the gateway. If I recall correctly you need the gateway to finish with the letter F to be OK. If like mine it ends with a C you'll definitely need a new canbus gateway as the battery will eventually drain. I originally upgraded to an rcd310 from a 300 and noticed the sound quality difference straight away and could now play mp3 CDs. I was lucky and managed to source a can gateway from a localish VW breaker who didn't really know what I was after and sold it to me for £15. I was able to recode the gateway using vcds to suit my car without any problems. A word of warning though - the gateway needs to be from a Passat to be compatible as golf and skoda ones whilst looking the same just don't work in the Passat for some reason best known to VW and perhaps martin1810 :-)
