Driving my Golf TDI home last night when the glow plug light came on twice. Each time the car jumped then the battery light came on then it died.

The battery light stayed on but it could turn over but not burst into life.

It started after a few minutes then the light went out.

I got a new battery a few weeks back and the glow plugs were replaced in december last year.

It also cuts while ideling and while driving it will cut out then get the oil light coming on with 3 beeps from the dash.

Does anyone have any ideas please

More than likely just a simple brake light switch fault. You need to get a fault code read done to prove this. The switches are very cheap but also very easy to damage when installing and the technique varies according to the version of switch you fit. The part number has changed more times than I can remember in the last ten years.

It blows bulbs a lot, mostly brake light bulbs.

6 rear bulbs in 2 years and 3 head light ones.

A brake switch could cause the car to cut out?.

I have asked 5 or so mechanics and not one has suggested this.

They just rub there chins and say 'ohhh could be anything'

Im sure its worse with the cold weather.

Fault code reader? no fault shows on the computer.

    Relay 109?

Been doing some net searching and the fault people describe sounds like mine.

What and where is this found on the car?

So it has had a fault code read last night or today and has shown no fault codes?

Relay 109 is on the relay plate under the dash with (at position 12 but that won’t mean anything to you) with “109” printed on top and is VAG part number 1J0 906 381 A and costs £13.48 from VW.

The engines computer has the ability to detect faults and store them as a code which can be read with a suitable system such as VAG-COM which you will see mentioned on here a lot.

It has been on the computer and returned a no fault.

I read people have had the same response and the relay 109 was still the problem.

When was it read for codes, before or after the glow plug light flashed?
