I had to change a tire on my A4 the other day and couldn't work out how to screw the spare back in with the plastic tube.

I'm guessing it should separate into two parts, the first part which screws into the protrouding screw on the boot floor and the other that goes through the tire and screws into the first half. I can't get it into two pieces and it's too big to fit through the tyre.

    What am I doing wrong??

you are trying to put it through the centre of the wheel, and not through one of the stud holes on the wheel?

Yes, that's right. It's too big to fit through a stud hole. If it split into two parts it would fit through the centre hole though.

try putting the spare back in the well in the opposite way it is now, with the inside of the wheel towards the top, and perhaps the lower part of the screw will then be long enough to screw in leaving the majority sticking up, but inside the wheel?
clear as mud that, wasn't it?
as the picture just posted has beat me to it!!!

if it wasn't in the spare wheel you took out of the boot, then perhaps it was originally designed to fit a "space saver" wheel that may have been subsituted for a "real" wheel before you got the car?
