Damn these 'modern' hi tec' cars (modern to me anyhow..) why's the oil grade so crucial & most of all so difficult to understand ?
I just dont understand al the oil-related techno-gumf in the VW handbook...
What can I get away with putting into her ?
    A half decent 15/40 diesel mineral ?
    A slightly higher spec semi-synthetic?

The Pd engines need special oil to VW spec. 505.01 for oil chenges up to 10K or one year and VW spec.506.01 for extended servicing. The special oil is required because of the high loading on the camshaft driven (PD) injector pumps. The PD oils are high shear lubricants.
Many owners change oil at 5k intervals.
Millers XFE PD 5w-40 to VW505.01 is a safe bet at around £20 for 5 litres, but most if not all the major oil manufacturers produce oil to VW specifications.

    The AHU isn’t too critical, just needs to conform to VAG standards 505 00, 500 00, 507 00 or 501 01.
