Starting Problem

I HAVE starting problem with my VW GOLF 1.8 Automatic. After 2 or 3 tries, with pumping the gas pedal it starts. After starting everything is fine. My garage man told me it may be something to do with the sensor and he replaced it, just where the coolant passes. but no avail. Anybody have any ideas. The batteries are fine and all other things are function extremely well in the car except the starting problems.

does it turn over at all? i ussaly start with checking my battery and alternator first then distrib utero and so on.. how about the timeing belt.. if it sound sliek it wants to start but just doesn"t.. check and make sure it's still there
