HI i have a 51 plate 1.9 td 115bhp,and for some reason the temp takes ages to warm up. I mean around 20 - 30 minutes before reaching running tempreture, i have replaced the thermostat but to no avail. I also had trouble with the aux heater which required a new glow plug and had trouble ever since, could this be related? and can anyone please help?

    regards

Hi yes you need to see if the heater is working it should start with the engine running, and an outside temp less than +5degres,

the rear heater works fine now, i thought that it was only a auxillary heater for the back. do you think that it may have something to do with my problem?

It is the auxillary heater which helps heat up the engine coolant water, which is the source to heat the heaters, so inndirectly the auxillary heater does not heat up the car innside

So the engine does not need the aux heater? what could be my problem?

it really takes ages to warm up. i thought maybe there could be another valve in addition to the thermostat or some sensor that controls it has gone. could i be right?

It's not the temp gauge as the front heaters take ages to warm up.

If you re-read his post carefully he's saying that yes - it's your auxillary heater that's the problem, forget about the extra matrix and blower fan inside at the rear of the car for a moment.

These engines generate very little friction & heat, so they take a very long time to warm up hence the small diesel burning heater under the car to speed engine warm up. This will add to the heat inside the car but this isn't the main purpose of the unit.

There is nothing wrong with the engine, or the cooling system - your heater burner unit under the car needs fixing.

Right i get it.. but there can't be much to fix i've had the thing apart. so really the only answer is to replace the whole unit?

Hi again these units are very expensive normaly they are easy to repair it usually is the glow plug thats at fault.I take it, its an Eberspeche thats fitted on the car, there is a diagnostic instrument which we use to find the fault.

i replaced the glowplug as i had the dreaded white smoke syndrome. I also had sparks coming from the unit, could it be the Control motor for temperature regulating flap? ( by coincidence i saw it on ebay and thought it may be relevent)? what diagnostic tool do you use? I will check tomorrow what make it is.

Hi What happens with these units is, if during start procedure on the 2nd phase, fuel is pumped in,and if the the unit does not start, then it cuts out. After so many start atempts without starting the unit is flooded with fuel,It will not help to change the glow plug if the unit is full of diesel, you must remove it and empty it.From what you said it would seem it is trying to start, but the glow plug is not heating enough because of the excesive fuel. The diagnostic equipment is something Eberspeche supplys,it is placed in line with the wiring harness and it gives you different fault codes.
