Software and cable are relitively cheap and a good investment. Its not difficult to use and it fairly safe once you use common sense and read through FAQ's first.

Can't be of more help as I'm in Ireland sorry.

thanks peter, have always shied away from it when i see all the graphs etc! have a laptop, could you help me as in where to start, leads, software, how to make sense of it all?!!
there must be a specific passat software that tells you what all the different things should be at?
I am particularly interested in the ability to tweak your timing, etc, is that possible?
All help and advice gratefully received!Adam

Ross-tech is the site you need. You will need a copy of VCDS which is the software this is free to use if you just want to check for fault codes stored and I think $99 for the full version. You'll need a USB to OBD2 cable which can be got off ebay or if you want a fully supported c/w warrenty etc then buy one from Ross tech. Note that you will not get support in general if they don't supply the cable but there are plenty of forums which will give you information.

In terms of graphs etc for a PD engine health check i.e. temps, boost, timing etc have a look in this section for martain and he has a website in his signature (his own) that give loads of info.

It seems expensive at first but the smallest of problems can throw up a check engine light that may be a very easy fix but a garage will charge you at least £40 to check and clear the fault the software will pay itself back in 2 trips to the garage.

thanks for that peter, have got a wee cheapie code reader that lets me read fault codes and clear them, but definitely time to upgrade!have had my passat(2002 1.9 tdi awx) for over a year, it sitting at 190,000 miles, and apart from servo problem, brakes binding etc,it given me 30,000 relatively trouble free miles,so want to try and keep it going as long as poss, engine sweet as a nut!
Thanks again for help and advice, will follow it all up, cheers Adam
