1997 A4 air con woes...

My 1997 1.8 se (climate control) seems to have an intermittant problem with the air con.

That is, sometimes it will turn on, others it wont. When its on it works fine. I can hear the relay click when it does come on, but there is no click when it wont. The little snow symbol just comes on then goes straight off again.

Any ideas anyone?

If the outside temperature is below 5 deg C the aircon compressor will not switch on, as it is not needed to regulate temps.

It may also switch off temporarily under certain conditions if you have an auto gearbox.

Ah, that explains it. I thought it might have had something to do with the cold, but couldn't understand the intermittant-ness of it.

Car is a manwel, so can't be to do with an auto box.
