    Hi,
Is a 2003 1.6 16V Golf Match cambelt or chain driven? Also,
can anyone tell me if it has an interference engine?

    Cheers.

It is belt driven, it hits when it fails and it should be done every 60K miles or 5 years, whichever comes first. It makes sense to also change the water pump at the same time.

thanks for the quick reply. The car in question has 100k miles on the clock and there is no mention in the service history of a cambelt change (regular inspection services). Is it likely that it's never been changed or is there any way of telling it has been changed but not recorded in the manual?

i was told that they revised it to 40k or 4 years (and have read on various forums). Just had mine done on my 2003 1.6 16v SE (BCB), cost me £250 at local garage (VW dealer quoted £450+), incl water pump
