my problem is for some amount off time now my golf 1.6auto has become worse at starting, it all started maybe a year back, occaisionally when i turned it over it would just make a noise how can i put it, id say similar 2 how i imagine a cat would sound if i was been strangled and wouldnt start, however on the good turns it would start no problem, anyway my battery was 2 blame apparently so that got replaced and all was well 4 maybe 4-6 months up until recently, last few week as been terrible it will start on a morning no troubles then once warm it is a nightmare i get the cat strangled turn about 3 in 5 turns on average and the good turns the other two but it might actually start 1 in a 1000 times on one of the good turns completely random, ive replaced the battery with a brand new battery off an LT, which im assured should start fighter jets, a new dizzy cap, ive had the alternator checked over and had a local mechanic look over it but still no joy its now 2 the state where i have to put petrol in whilst its on drive or risk been stuck on garage forcourt any help would be very much appreciated

you haven't mentioned the starter motor. don't you think that this may be the problem?

Hi thanks 4 the replies, i should have pointed out i know absolutely nothing about cars, but just had the car on computer at local dealer in and was told nothing was showing. I also put the starter motor to the mechanic (as it seemed most likely to me) but he had a theory why it couldnt have been the starter motor which i have forgot now but it did i remember kind off make sense, but i know naff all so basically either right or wrong im not sure but he advised me not to buy a starter motor and look for bad earths. So thats the stage im at now.

I have noticed smell of petrol frequently when the car is running and also just parked up, altho i cannot see any leaks i never mentioned this to the mechanic either as i didnt think it could be related however i did when he was turning car mention the smell and he said petrol was getting through thats why it could be smelt

Relay 30 and starter motor too gets really hot i have noticed when trying to start an and the relay smells burnt inside is this with all the failed starts? or a fault? as i said i havent a clue about cars

if you had problems with earths while cranking, you would be constantly having to reset the
clock after start up as it would be showing 00.00. do you have this problem?
still sounds like starter motor to me mate.

no i did have that problem at one time but that was just a blown fuse all my friends who have a little knowledge about cars point to the starter motor too, maybe the mechanic is wrong?
