GT TDI - gear oil spec

I'm looking to change my gear oil to cure cold start problems. I've been recommended Redline MTL; does anyone know the correct spec/viscosity I'll need? Also, does anyone know the standard spec VW use in the factory? I've been searching everywhere for this but can't seem to find out anywhere!

you could try just holding the clutch in whilst starting to take the extra drag off the starter motor

Thanks anyway but I think you misunderstood what I meant. The problem I'm having is my gear changes are a tad notchy when the engine is cold and was looking to cure this by changing the gear oil. It's my fault for not explaining properly, sorry.


I was just looking at the Redline range of gear oils and they do a 75/90 GL4 and a 75/90 GL5; does anyone know what the difference is and which one I'll need? Thanks.

I've read somewhere that gl5 can damage the brass syncros in the gearbox!! Only something I've read mind.

Thanks again for your help. After a bit more researching I've found out that what you're saying seems to be true. I'm going to go with the 75/90 GL4, I knew I'd get there sooner or later. Just hoping this stuff is as good as everyone makes it out to be!
