Loud clunking noise from gearbox!!

This morning I've noticed a loud clunky noise coming from behind me. Could be rear of car or could be centre.

Symptoms:
Driving i 1st/2nd/3rd gear the engine/drivetrains make a very loud grinding noise. It's awful. A little down on power.

When I take my fut off the gas (even for a split second) I get a loud mechanical clunk 'clunk' from the back.

If i put it in neutral, the engine revs smoothly. And I can let go of the acc without any clunky noises. Only seems to have problem when in gear.

Awful noise when changing gear... again don't know if this due to letting off the gas or the actual gears grinding. It was a 38 mile trip so I hope I haven't made the situation worse.

Any ideas?

The car idles fine. MPG was down but that could be down to climate (-1 degC). I did put in a bottle of Forte Deisel treatment in the weekend but it was alright then.

Well after an 80 mile round trip of clunking and grinding I took the car to my local garage when I got home.

He took for a quick test drive... and guessed it was a gearbox/engine mount.

Got on the ramp, took off part of the belly pan.... a bolt dropped out. It had completely sheared off. You could push the gearbox/engine with your hand and watch it swing. That was making the banging noise.

Shall have it sorted tomorrow. Hope it's not more than an hours labour!

concern this problem, as i have the same year and model car.

Yup... £15 labour and the job's a good'n.

I asked my brother as he was the last person to drive the car before I noticed the problem... and he did say he heard a loud knock as he went over a speed bump.

Thankfully there was no excessive damage to other parts.
