Hi, i have got my self a MK3 GTI 8V With a 2E engine! it had been sat for a while with a knackerd gearbox so i changed that, now its back together I have a problem, it has no power, The engine was likes this before i touched the gearbox by the way...

It runs fine, spot on when cold, but with in 2/3 mins, if i put my foot to the floor, it splutters and grunts, i can here a lot of induction noise but there is absolutly no power what so ever! If i gently accelerate its will speed up as expected. as soon as i fully open the thottle, you can feel the power just go! Also if i rev the engine in neutral by fully opening the throttle it will splutter and grunt and backfire slightly.

Does any one have any idea what this could be? Im stumped! Any advice would be greatly apreciated.

    Cheers.

i had a similar problem.... before my single point injection unit packed in, i changed the gasket on the single point injector then the throttle cable. it helped... then the injector died, and now i cant get a hold of one.
now that its all sorted, who's getting the beers in?

Hi, thanks for the reply, i guess its something to do with the fueling but its Multi point injecton so im not to sure. It seems spot on when its cold but its over heating at the moment as it has air in the system, I will sort that first!

The most common cause of this on a 2E is the throttle potentiometer. The first thing to do is get a fault code read, print and clear done. Then drive it and have the codes read again to see which ones come back. On later 2E ECU's you can watch the TP operating on the diagnostic systems live data display.

You will have to find someone with the 2x2 adapter but not necessarily VAG-COM, there are many other systems. Try your local garage to see if they have a code reader and the early adapter.

could be coolant temp sensor saying to the ecu to overfuel the engine, hence why when cold its fine then when warm goes downhill.
