Passat CV Boot replacement

Hi All,

I need to replace the outer cv boots on my 03 Passat Estate, and have just been quoted £212 +vat for doing both sides by a local VW service specialist (not a dealer). Does this sound about right or over the top?

Are they an easy DIY job as I don't have a garage and it's starting to get damp outside!

I have also looked at the 'split cv boot' kits - any views on these?

Thats a lot of money...If you come to London, i could do them for 100 pounds including the parts ! It will take about 1.5- 2 hours ! They are ok to replace if you are a good DIY mechanic, but you will need a set off basic tools, a long breaker bar and a pair of axle stands and a few more basic tools(snips, pincers, balljoint separator,large hammer, big flat screwdriver, etc.) and a good workshop manual like Haynes ! Take your time and you wont go wrong. There is a how to in one off me old treads, if you decide to DIY , just read it and take care when you split the CV joint to put the washers/springs the right way round. Regards, Chris.

That price is a bit steep, I had mine done as well as a service and brake fluid change, at a VW main dealer for £224.

In my experience, all be it not on VW's, the split boots are allright for a quick repair to get you through an MOT, but don't last.

I am looking for a guide to replace my outer cv boot on a 98 passat 1.8t petrol. I have trawled threw adamms24 previous replies to find the HOW TOO but can't find it. I would be gratefull if anyone could point me in the direction of the 'How Too' cv boot replacement.

Use it along with the Haynes manual,although when the Haynes manual tells you to screw the driveshaft bolt into the end of the CV to separate it from the shaft....IGNORE IT! All that does is knacker the end of the bolt, so you can't unscrew it. Don't ask me how I know.

The other thing I discovered - on my 53 plate 1.9 TDI - is that you don't need to undo the steering/suspension joints. By unbolting the inner CV joint from the gearbox and then jacking the suspension upwards, the inner end of the driveshaft drops low enough to clear the gearbox.

I have now done both sides and the offside was much easier.
