Hi. I have purchased a new leather gear stick gaiter on eBay for my late 2000 new model Sharan and am delighted with it. However, I cannot see how to remove the old gaiter. The consul panel lifts up easily enough, and I can pull up and inverse the old gaiter over the gear knob (like an umbrella in wind) to reveal a very permanent looking circular clip around the shaft, and that's about it. I'm not prone to destroying anything without being sure...
Does anyone know how to replace the gear stick gaiter in a VW Sharan Nov 2000 (X) new model?

    For other readers:

Lift the boot up and inside out and you will find a crush clamp rather like a fuel hose clamp. Open up the crush section with a flat screwdriver and the knob will come away, re crush the section to re-secure.

Works a treat. Now got a smart new leather gaiter with the help of eBay and this site for just £13.00.

VW Sharan Nov 2000 New Model. Hopefully the following helps:
    1. Gently pull original gaiter upwards to release central consul shelf including ash tray.
    2. Disconnect electrical supply to lighter.
    3. Invert gaiter over gear knob.
    4. Gently prise open crimp with flat screwdriver. No need to remove crimp.
    5. Pull gear knob from shaft, complete with gaiter and central consul.
    6. Remove staples securing gaiter to consul.
    7. With the gaiter inverted, remove black sleave holding gaiter to knob. This is very difficult. Because my new gaiter was thicker (leather) I ended up carefully slicing the sleave down the side.
    8. The rest is 'reversing' the procedure but: I reused the sliced sleave, repositioning (squashing) it using a temporary jubilee clip and permanent strong tape. I reused the same crimp with no difficulty. I used a standard stapler to replace the staples and attach the new gaiter to the plastic consul - it worked OK except for the corners which I simply tucked in.
    10. The procedure took an hour and the new gaiter looks and smells great!
