Juddering clutch om my transporter

Hi my T4 van is suffering from a juddering noise from the clutch as you take off only bought the van monday from a dealer went back today and said to him and he told me that all vws do it its because its a five cyclinder has any one self had same problem

Sounds to me like either oil on the clutch plate or knackered clutch plate springs. I can't believe all VWs do it, or nobody would buy one.

Hi thanks for reply is it much work to do this job as im gonna take it back tomorrow and say to him that im not happy with it .Is it much work to fit new clutches in these vans cause i havent got a clue

Although I've never done a clutch in a T4, I can't imagine it's any more difficult than any other clutch. Probably no more than a couple of hours work for an experienced mechanic.

You have got a worn clutch all right. Your salesman is pulling you leg. I had my clutch changed here in Norway for 2 years ago. Cost 1500 £. (Everything is expensive here..)
Not a good idea trying to change it yourself- I have heard it's a specialist job

I had this problem on my T4 2.4 5 cylinder at around 200,000 miles especially in reverse uphill. I traded it in for a 2.5tdi after it had reached 250,000 miles still with the same worn out clutch ,never slipped once.
I would change a clutch on this van myself and it should cost me no more than £150.for parts and all the pain killers I am allowed by my nurse.

Judder is a common problem with T4s. It may be ok, but could be on its last legs? Its a major job to change, engine out (through the bottom) complete with gearbox and suspension, on 2.5s, not really a diy job?, about £700ish by VW I gather.

If the judder is caused by a Dual Mass Flywheel (DMF) starting to fail that will add to the expense. AFAIK these were mostly fitted to the 4 cyl engines, not the 5 cyls.

My T5 5cyl manual has no clutch judder at all. The engine has a slightly uneven throb due to it being 5 cyl, but you couldn't call it a "judder".
