    Hi
Im fairly new to this site but thought someone may be able to help me. I have a 150 BHP GTTDI golf (2003), recently my clutch seems to be acting up on occassions. The clutch seems to slip in the higher gears after 4th gear at above 2000 rpm where the revs go up suddenly cos i assume the clutch is slipping and then come back down to normal. This happens when i put my foot down slightly. Also I have when i come off the motorway after about an hours drive the clutch pedal goes really soft with no resistance till the very bottom which makes it very difficult to change gear (biting point goes lower) temporarily for a few mins straight off the motorway after whcih the clutch returns to normal. These problems have got me worried as to what the cause may be? Does this mean i need a new clutch how can i find out? Also how much would it cost for a new clutch parts and labout assuming it is a new clutch i need?
Would really appreciate any help/advice as its driving me up the wall!

    Thanks
    Rio

Hi I had a similar problem on my Polo, and the bad news is that if it is the same problem you will need to change the clutch and sooner rather than later. The problem that I had was that the thrust started to eat its way through the pressure plate.

sorry for the bad news but you have a dmf dual mass flywheel and very expensive if you go to the main *******.
i think the last quote i had was around the 295 price
do change the flywheel at the same time as you do not want to do the same jobs just months apart.
try euro car parts your local branch or german and sweedish both very good for prices and quality parts...
    hope this helps ...rich...

Looks like my spending money is going to be blown! pardon my ignorance but what is a dual mass flywheel?! is this part of the clutch or separate? the 295 figure you said is that just for the dmf? Also any idea on labour cost is it a difficult job?! Thanks for the advice

ok sorry bit late at nite
    the 295 consists of
    1x friction plate
    1x release bearing
    1x pressure plate
    1x dual mass flywheel
the above price is just for parts labour is around 150 250 local garage
as for hard have you changed a clutch before ???
    very inportant to align correctly
as said the dmf is a new version of the fly wheel as to take the lash off the gear box as vw.s havw allways had g. box probs
    hope this helps ...rich//

Rich thanks for your help. Im quite an amateur with cars to be honest but learning slowly! have a haynes manual here so will read up on what makes up the clutch etc. I assume the parts you have suggested make up the clutch?! really appreciate your help cos to be honest i dont have a clue apart from noticing that my clutch is slipping! hence thinking its a problem with the clutch!
