Hi new to the forum, i've just bought a passat tdi 130 bhp on a 51 plate, took it for an mot today, apart from the usual suspects, brake discs, pads, track rod arm , there was a serious oil leak with oil in the water reservoir, the guy said it could possibly be the head gasket, but he also mentioned something about the gearbox cover, i was a bit shocked to see oil swimming with the water so i didn't pay much attention, anyone have a similar problem or know what the guy was trying to say. I bought this car from someone i know who's had it parked up for near on 13 months, the interior is a beige velour and even after a heavy duty valet it's not looking good, ,but thats the least of my worries i've only had it a few days and i've spent a few hundred quid allready, plus some , i must add it drives incredibly well, anyhelp appreciated, thanks

just checking through some old posts and previous members with the same problem have been advised that it could be the oil cooler, a pressure test is mentioned, how do you go about this ? thanks

Hi Replacing the oil cooler and cleaning the coolant system usually cures this problem. To pressure test the oil cooler it has to be removed. As mentioned in a previous post there is the possibility that it is the head gasket, but taking into consideration the price of replacing the head gasket compared to the oil cooler,i would go for the oil cooler first.

Thanks to all for your help, if it wasn't for this forum i'd had probaly spent major $$$$$$$'s on the head gasket, Passat 2003 i've noticed there is no further oil covering my engine and none seems to be coming out of the header tank, so your spot on , thanks once again to you all.
