Ah...just when I thought I understood the knocking noise from my car, I read this post! I have had the symptoms of a knackered cv joint for many months, i.e. clicking noise from the OS when turning/ coming out of a junction at low speed, but as well as that I have a knocking noise over rough, uneven surfaces too which I was almost sure was the upper arms (upper front & rear) as if you grip them with your hand, there is slight movement in them. One of the above posts mentions a bad knocking noise? Although maybe I just need both these parts, cv joint and suspension arms...?

I am doing a lot of Passat 3B/A4/A6 complete arm and joint kit rebuilds these days as a full Febi kit (including every single fastener required) puts it right for basically the rest of its service life and saves doing the arms one by one. If you replace the arms, avoid cheap ones like the plague, we used to use them and often they don’t last a year so we end up doing it under warranty which is annoying.

Replacing the whole lot in one go is obviously the best way forward, but many people simply can't afford to do this. I'm after a set of 4 upper arms and I can get these from a car parts place on ebay for £64 including postage, although this may seem cheap, these parts suppliers also supply a lot of vw/audi dealers. And for the amateur mecanic, replacing all of them in one go may be a little daunting! I've done the lower arms and feel confident at having a go on the upper ones, they look a biteasier than the lowers.

If a VW dealer was caught fitting such parts, they would be in deep trouble and could potentially loose their franchise. Personally I have never heard of a main dealer doing this, is this what the supplier told you are something you have experienced? At £64 for four they will be cheap Chinese versions, the type I have found wear very quickly. The upper arms can potentially be a nightmare to do as the strut and top plate have to come out and if the 100-mm upright top bolt will not come out, it can be a nightmare but as you are replacing all four top arms, you can get away with heating the top pickup point but this isn’t advised as you can damage the upright. Make sure you replace all the bolts/nuts you remove and set the upper arm drop measurement which I don't have a picture of that I am allowed to post, VAG UK are watching!

No, sorry, I meant vw/audi specialists not main dealers, check this link out and view the parts, this set is around £70 with p&p, let me know what you think if you don't mind. I didn't realise the upper arms were such a big job, thats bad news. As you've replaced so many, what are they like when they go, can you move them with your hand as I described above? Can you buy single febi arms?

Yes wear is quite obvious on the upper arms, much more so that with the lower. We can normally see it with what we call the “wiggle test”, basically grab the tyre at 9 and 3 o’clock (off the deck) and wiggle it, any play should be obvious but also lever the arms up and down to see if there is any play. I have no idea on the quality of those fleaBay parts but the printing on the looks suspiciously like the ones we have had problems with. Yes, Febi arms are available separately but beware, Febi have such a good name they are experiencing forgery problems so we only buy direct from Febi UK.
