Had news back from the garage that the cause of the above was the cam shaft position sensor, well not the sensor itself as they've replaced that but the wiring/contacts to the ECU. Could anyone tell me what this does and would this cause poor performance and high fuel consumption?

Also, how difficult is it to find a wiring fault in this loom and where is it located?

I'm not sure what engine yours has in it but this is some info on a AGU engine (1.8T, 150bhp)

The camshaft sensor (not 100% without seeing it) should be behind the front camshaft sprocket, under the timing belt cover, but i think they have a wire on them heading towards the front of the engine. The wires to the sensor should be as follows; violet and red to pin 1, violet and yellow to pin 2, brown and blue to pin 3.

The Engine E.C.U is underneath the scuttle panel (under the wiper arms)(worth checking and cleaning the earth point infront of it) and the pins relating to the camshaft sensor are as follows. from camshaft sensor (to) Engine E.C.U
pin 1: pin 62 (also goes to TPS and Baro Sensor)
    pin 2 : pin 76
pin3 : pin 67 (also goes to ECT, IAT, CKP, both KS, CTP, TP, ISC, BARO Sensor.)

make sure the e.c.u is disconnected before probing with a multimeter, and the battery is disconnected before the e.c.u

The wires should be the same colours at camshaft sensor and e.c.u.

    Hope that helps!

Thanks for the notes. Would this cause the under performance and high fuel consumption?

Sorry, forgot to say it's an AUG 1.8 turbo engine.

The garage said it's a hard fault after changing the sensor. They have also changed the AMM.

Sorry i can't find any info on a AUG engine, but bad connections or crimped wires can cause alsorts of problems.

The cambelt itself could cause bad fuel economy, and lack of power. It might just be that the camsensor is detecting that the camshaft is out of alignment of the crankshaft, caused by incorrect tension of the belt or mis-aligned timing.

    hope that helps.

That was my concern from the original work I had done following the blocked oil strainer - see original thread on the first post. The guy at the garage said that he took the rocker cover off and inspected the cam but no damage. Could he have disturbed something there?

Now the guy at a different garage is saying that there is a hard fault with the cam sensor despite fitting a new sensor.

    Help, please!

I can't see taking the rocker cover off causing this fault, only if they caught some wires or even the small breather pipes. might be worth checking the breather pipes, to see if theres one not connected.

Cheers pipvw, many thanks for your help.

How could the cam become misaligned or the belt tension be affected?
