Audi TT Cambelt query

Hi,

I have a 2001 Audi TT, it's only done 15,000 miles.......do I need to have my cambelt changed? it has been 5 years, but the mileage is very low? What do people think? Thanking you in advance.

Yes you need it changing , the belt will age over time it will also age with use, thats why they give a 60,000 miles or 5 years option , get the water pump changed as well and the rollers + tensioner, it will save money in the long run (snaped belt = a shed load of money)

Where'd you get the 60,000/5 years from?
Is this the official Audi policy?
If there's any documentation to this effect it would really help me.

Audi recomends: engine code AJQ replacement every 180.000 Km(111.846 miles), APX(->2000MY), replacement every 180.000 Km(111.846 miles), APX 2001MY-> : replacement every 120.000 Km( 74.564 miles). Note: the manufacturer publishes this info in Km, the conversion to miles is included for reference purposes only. THE PREVIOUS USE AND SERVICE HISTORY OF THE VEHICLE MUST ALWAYS BE TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT.

Take it from me, the APX belts don't last 111k miles.
Audi tell me variously that they should be replaced every 60k or 80k miles.
Audi dealers tell me variously they should be replaced every 60k/4 years or 80k/5 years according to their whim.
Still haven't seen anything on paper from Audi.
Nor do I suppose I ever will...

APX built to may 2000- replace at 180.000 km. From may 2001 onwards, replace every 120.000 m= 74 K miles. Its wise to replace before and to take the age of the car and the way its been used as well into consideration. If the car has been abused/trashed then it wont last that long. What i posted are facts of autodata website updated to my laptop. Audi wont give anything written as they paid heavilly before due to failed cambelts... Hope this helps.

The mileage of 60,000 and time scale of 5 years was off Audi , if you go to the TT forum and as on there you will also find these amounts, something to do with not converting the kilometers to miles in the service booklet and somebody claiming for a new engine when the belt snapped (and getting one as well ,COOL )

i've just got a '99 TT with 64,000 miles and the service book says nothing about any belt changes

i noticed this old thread, anyone got any quick prices for the belt changes and the water pump? and which ones are the essentials? or should i get them all changed?!?!

You should get both the cam belt and tensioner changed and also the water pump at the same time , as if the water pump should start to play up ( they have a plastic impeller which tends to come loose after a while when hot ) the cam belt has to be removed to do this so you pay twice for the sake of about £30 for the water pump....

used to have an a3 and the water pump went on that quite a while ago so i should've remembered that really!

it's due a service anyway so i guess i'll get them to do as you suggested too... hopefully it won't be overly expensive!
