id tell your workshop to run some wiring along the exsisting wiring for this circuit and try that,i presume they have checked all the wiring for resistance and mutual shorting.Difficult fault to cure without eliminating the wiring and earth points.Idea with very advanced wiring on audi a8,q7 etc and most faults i find are actual loose pins or loose earth points which drive me mad in the ed

Well a genuine G28 sender is £66.60 inc. VAT (my price list is slightly out of date) and a G40 sender is £24.25 so the sender cannot have been genuine.

crasher , thanks for that i will check with garage on tuesday . i took it to small side street garage and they put new speed sensor on first but when it never worked i took it to ind vw garage where it has been for months and that was the first thing they checked , that it was a genuine part . do you think it could have the wrong sensor fitted then as they said same things as you that vw manual says to change ecu .

Well the ECU and sensor have been changed and the wiring checked so that is the system. Now the possibility of a fault with the speed sensor ring has to be investigated so the next step would be to remove the gearbox, clutch and flywheel to examine and replace the sender wheel. This is a complex process that must be carried out using a special VW tool or the correct positioning of the sender cannot be guaranteed. One thing, has it had a clutch or flywheel oil seal replacement?

It is a good six hours labour, plus part (£63) and the tool would need to be bought but I have no idea how much the tool is, I would guess at £100 or so. The clutch has to come off so as these are highly unreliable on these I would also fit a new clutch, another £100 ish.
