    Hi guys,

I've just had my car into VW for a service and they highlighted to me that there was an oil leak between the gearbox and the engine but they didn't know the exact location. So this morning i took off the sump guard and degreased all the enginebay. Now everything is clean and dry i can see that Diesel is leaking from the unit in the attached picture which i think is the Vaccuum Pump / Diesel Pump (Not the gearbox as VW said). It looks like it has a black plastic cap with a gasket between which must be leaking.

Has anyone herd of this problem before and will it be as simple as removing the cover and putting a new gasket on ?

    Any help would be appreaciated.

Very common, It could be the gasket or the seal. If it's the seal it needs a new pump fitting. It's called a tandem pump btw.

    Hi

Is that the fuel pump? or is that near the tank?

As Passat Sport says, it's the tandem pump.

Gasket is about a fiver from *******'s, but seal can't be purchased separately and new pump is required if that's gone. They're about £300 (gulp) and have to be ordered from Germany I've heard.

They leak with great regularity it seems and often cause starting problems (my Bora has a small leak in the same place and is really smoky on cold starts). Looks like another useful money spinner for VW!

in the tank lies a little electric fuel pump, to lift the fuel to the tandem pump.
