    Hi,

I have noticed today a grating noise when I put the steering on full lock and move off, can't see anything!
It had a service last week at 37K and it has to go back as they tried to fix a dashboard rattle which now rattles worse under acceleration So I will ask them to look at it, just wondering if anybody else had noticed similar?

Mine did this from new on full right lock. It turned out to be the inner part of the tyre rubbing on the inner wing liner which had become unclipped and had distorted. VW wanted me to purchase a new inner wing liner but I got them to perform a temporary fix and that worked fine for 12000 miles until I went through a farly deep flood which has caused the issue to re-appear.

Check some of the other posts for a cure for the dashboard rattle - it can be done.

If sathound's suggestion isn't your problem, check the lock stops. Also there have been problems with the steering racks on some cars, but I'm not sure if your symptoms are the same.

    Could be a CV joint.

Go to an isolated Car Park. Put the car into full lock left and drive with the window down in first gear. Then do it left....

If you get a clicking noise on either lock then the CV joint in that side of the car is buggered and needs replacing.

You can DIY it but I've never had the patience. Garage should do it for a few bob.... Nothing that will break the bank.

I had that problem as well, but VW reattached it under warranty and it hasn't recurred.

Might be worth a look if any driver is experiencing a noise on or near full lock.

My Sport 170 Manual Estate does this and I thought it was the creaking of the CV Boot(s) which being made of Rubber or EPDM, naturally creak a bit when flexing as they would on full lock.

However, after reading this thread I will now check underneath me arches !

    Thanks guys !

My car was at VW today for the same noise and it turns out to be the top mount and spring rubbing apparently a known problem. Anyway they informed that the parts will be ordered today although they are on back order. Nothing to worry about I was informed.

I will let you know when its done
