Cant work out how to get the cover off the car under the glove box. Have got the 2 screws off but thats as far as I got. anyone any clues
If you undo the 5 screws for the glovebox, remove the glovebox light wiring plug carefully(the light comes out by prising it like a indicator lens on the wing) and remove the glovebox and you can then see all there is.the lower cover has 2 screws on both sides that should be covered with plastic inserts but with the glovebox out all is revealed and easy to work with and you can also see the other screws.

Hi I have a 2000 Passat and my heating/cooling system just stopped working. It worked in the beginning but gradually over about a period of a couple weeks it just stopped. I am trying to avoid spending unnecessary money so did anyone else have this same problem. Wjile looking on this site I seen many differrent reasons as to a blower fan or resistor unit which I know nothing of. Can someone help me out.

    Hi there twosweattoeat22

You dont state what happens or doesent but start with the "climacontrol" first and it's related fuse(s),does it allow all controlls to work and do you have a digital display visible. If pressing either the cold or hot button(red or blue)does the blower fan come on and the engine revs briefly increase(aircon on)as well as the display working. If nothing happens then it's usually the controll unit that is faulty but this could be "dry joint's" on soldered components or a resistor or diode that is faulty.A breakers will sell them for around £60 and they are easy to replace. If youre lucky it's just a bad connector to the controller,i had a poor connection on my hazzard&indicator/relay/button in my 1998 passat(s-reg) that left me with no signals in rush hour traffic and the abuse i got for using hand signals was sad.My case was just polishing what appeared to be perfectly clean contacts on the relay/switch and it is as good as new since. So check the display&controlls and if dead then the relevent fuse and i hope this help's a little.

    Regards

    Clint.

    Hi All,
I have a 1.9Tdi Sport 2001 and my climatecontrol is playing up as well.
Once the car is warm a tapping noise starts behind the facia, if I stop the engine and just let the unit run its a bit noisy. Everything works fine, the blowers, temp etc. It only started a couple of weeks ago and does'nt effect any of the functions. Could this be the start of motor probs ????

    Hi ROBH

The airconditioning duct's behind the dash are controlled by small electronic motor's that open and close the vent's as per your setting's,hotter- then a wider opening.Basically it's like the throttle on a inlet, you press the pedal and the flap opens wider and closes upon releasing pressure if it's not the motor's then have a listen to the big blower motor behind the glovebox. If you have auto setting's or economy then the system with work the motor's accordingly and hence the noise but it's difficult to say,if it's your engine then listen to the engine on a morning start with the engine cold and dont rev it,just start and listen, the tappets(hydraulic)will clatter lightly for a few second's(not longer than 10-30)depending on wear and abuse. On your diesel engine there is a oil vacuum unit that is round and aluminium about the shape of a mug which could give off a small hollow thumpy sound.Lastly there is a small fan on the bottom front right of the "climacontrol" that seems to spin when the engine is running, never heard of a worn one but listen there for your sound and if it's not there try to isolate the noise and have a listen with the engine ideling at the battery trough area for the noise as it could be slight tappet noise or just slapping from the camshaft pulley's.As you dont stae mileage etc i assume the car is in good condition and driven in reason and not reved on cold starts.Hope this help's a little.

    Regards

    Clint

Thanks Passat, its definately tapping and whirring when the engine is turned off and the ignition is on so that it runs.
It seems to have got worse now because when I set any warm temp its stopped tapping and gives me a very hot blast through any vent, the only way to stop us cooking in the car is when it gets unbearable we switch on to cold to cool the cab. ( the cooling side of is fine.)
I think it must be something to do with the thermostat in the Climate control and perhaps the tapping was that trying to control the heat and perhaps its a faulty relay or stat.
I'm not sure how these work so I am going to get it booked in and get their opinion and a quote for the repair.
Will let you know the outcome.
    thanks again
    Rob.

    Hi folks,

Thanks for all the posts so far, I just hope I can get a remedy for my problem now.

I’m so pleased I found what looks like a great forum of helpful people. I will try to explain what type of problem I have that seems to relate to this Climatronic air Conditioning unit.

My Passat has done 75,000 miles and is an auto estate TDI year 2000.

About 2 months ago I started hearing a clicking sound from around the glove box area (Passenger side). The noise is within the car not under the bonnet. So I bought a Haynes VW Passat manual in the hope to solve the problem.

After reading page 3.14 & 3.15 (for you that have the manual) that relates to the Air Conditioning Components & Blower motor Unit. I taken out the glove box to reveal the Blower Unit.

Ok you ask, does the Blower work, it sure does in Auto/Echo mode and the motor blows faster and slower as it should when you set the speed up and down, but this clicking wont go away until you set the system to reserculate the air inside the car( that's turning off auto/echo system) then the tapping noise goes away. Problem here is that now the winter is set in I steam up all the time.! That’s without any ladies in the car!!

    So

    Problem 1

What part do you think is doing the ticking sound( it comes from around the top left of the motor blower unit, contained within it) I would love to think I could replace the unit and save a bundle on VW costs. I was an engineer in the past and quite enjoy the DIY side.

    Problem 2

How to go about changing the unit/part not that I know what it looks like as yet. (one last thing I do also have airbag on the left so was hoping to slide the blower out if possible without moving the bag)

    Regards Cliffy

Found a garage in cheltenham who are ex audi/vw mechanics.
Went in on saturday and they have found that one of the two motors is defective. quoted me approx £70 for the part plus fitting.
Also had an earlier problem with my alarm and after connecting my car to a laptop said it was one of the sensors behind the driver that had caused it to go off. the problem has now cleared and they checked for damp with nothing found thank goodness. They then reset the alarm to remove the fault from the log. Would'nt take anything for doing it. Cancelled my date with the main VW dealer and taking it in next week.
Got home to replace the wiper blade, the main arm slipped out of my fingers and cracked the damn windscreen, flip !! now going to cost me a £50 excess on my insurance. Lifes a bitch.

I had a similar problem recently with my 2000 Passat Tdi. The heater would only work intermittantly and there would sometimes be a ticking noise from behind the dash which sounded like a relay(at the right hand side of the steering wheel) The heater eventually died altogether and after reading various forums i decided to remove the glovebox and heater motor.

On closer inspection it turned out that the heater motor brushes were worn out and I replaced them with a set of these http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...MESE:IT&ih=009

Fitted the new brushes and replaced the motor and everything is now perfect again.

Its frightening when you think that VW would have charged about £400 for this.

    Stage 1

There are a few things to note when working on this area around the airbag nearside. Apparently you must not attempt any work on the airbag, until you have taken out the driver’s keys from ignition and more important wait a further 30 minutes to allow the airbag to relax again. NOTE:- do not turn the ignition on while the airbag is unhooked, it will put a fault into the computer.
    Stage 2

This will allow you full-unrestricted entry to the Fan motor and any hidden stuff behind it.

    Stage3

On returning the airbag to the shell of the car and you are sure you have made all the connections, do not turn the ignition for 15 minutes that way all the relays and settings will be ok when you do turn on the motorcar.

Ok I am at (stage 1) now and this week end will try and work my way up into the area that is giving me the click, click, click sound. I think it is top left of the Fan motor. As I work on it I will take photos to remind me what parts go were haha and so you can use them as a reference at a later date.

    ROBH

do me a favour m8 and get me the telephone no. of the garage in Cheltenham. I would be happy to drive on down for that sort of price..

    BTW ROBH

My garage (VW) quoted £650.00 to complete the job, when I asked what they needed to do, they said that all the dashboard needed to come off and the was a 6 hour job .. I said *&^&% maybe later then !
