I've been doing some checking and I'm getting quite concerned about the accuracy of my speedo.

Having been down to the west country I was using my sat nav which I know to be accurate and I found even at lower speeds (30-35) that my speedo was in fact approx 5mph too high, is there a way to calibrate it accurately or does it require a trip to the dealer to get it done.

Hi Most speedometers show a higher reading. Look at it on the bright side you can always drive that little bit faster without getting a fine.Have you standard wheels on the car?

the higher indicated speed on speedos is to allow for changes in tyres/wheels so that you are still within the law.

I know on Some skoda's and I think on the MK5 golf you can press a few climate control buttons in the right order and you'll come across a digital speedo that is accurate.

    See here:

although DON'T buy that information as you can find it on Mr Google.

It annoys me how they make the speedos read so badly over, when they can make the odometer very accurate indeed, my CTR was exactly the same, odometer was bang on, speedo read far too fast.

The speedo on a modern car should be spot on imo.

If the manufacturers are doing it for 'our own protection' in case we either accidentally or intentionally end up with a larger wheel / tyre combo, then they must be making their policies at a Labout party conference....

Yes, I have standard wheels on the car and I have no intention now or in the future to upgrade them, I'm not a mod freak, I'm 41 and I don't want to tart things up, I just want a standard car with an accurate speedo.

I've got a trip up the M1, M42 which are laden with ****ing SPECs cameras, so I want to be sure that my speedo is accurate, so I don't get done for speeding!

Stick to what your speedo reads and you'll never get nicked.

Euro wally law says the speedo must read 10% higher than what you are doing, nanny state nonsense again. I was doing an indicated $!? and my nav said 10 mph less. Is everyone else getting as frustrated as me about the way we a controlled or, in the words of that fine man Wogan, “is it just me?”

    Hey Crasher,

No it ain't just you bud! I hate the fact that my speedo reads over.

Surely I'm big enough and ugly enough (no comments please ) to figure out that if my speedo reads more than 70 then I might get a fine!! Why do we need the euro numpties to wrap us in cotton wool?!?!?

I regularly set my climate control to show the accurate speed, which I must be honest actually winds me up more because I know that the car knows what speed I'm doing but it is lying to me!!
