my 2000 w-red tdi auto does the same thing and it's not good news. the first sign of the gearbox needing to be rebuilt is the reverse gear as it works on hydraulic pressure. then the forward gears will start to slip while on motorways etc. your looking around £1200 to rebuild. but dont worry, i put 40k on mine and it's still going.

Do an gearbox oil change + filter(dealer call it strainer) and see if it improves. You will need diagnostic equipment to monitor fluid temperature for the corect oil level. Too much or too litle is bad for the gearbox. If the oil does not smell burnt then one of the valves in the valve body is leaking hence litlle pressure on the reverse clutch so its slipping. A recconditioned valve body is £400...

Good advice. Gives me hope! I'm sure the same applies to the forward clutch. My Tiptronic surges by a few hundred revs several times a minute, sometimes juddering, part throttle in the lower gears, but this goes away when I put it in manual. £400 sounds a lot more appealing than a complete rebuild.

It's booked in to a main dealer next week for the diagnostic, but after reading this forum I think it's heading Crashers way regardless..
