hi all, i have a coupe 2.3e which i have done some minor mods to but i have just got hold of a 20v 2wd coupe for a bargain which i'm going to use as a donor for an engine re-build.
there a few queries i have before starting that i'd like some advice on.

    1. I have an induction kit on the 10v now(12months old and will be for sale once the donor goes in) and i'd like to fit one on the 7a engine but i cant find them for sale anywhere! can anyone help?
    2. I'm going to strip the engine down, whats the likely cost/benefit ratio of maybe boring the block out? plus where can i source replacement parts if i go down that route?
    3. are there any injector upgrades available for the 7a engine?
i've heard pros and cons on the stock injectors on these but would like some more info and opinions.
    4. i'm pretty sure i will get the head port and polished, has anyone any experience on doing these 20v heads.
    5. are there any other mods that are worth looking at while the engine is apart, ie. manifolds etc.

I'm not going to start on this for a few months but the more research and advice i can get now will be much appreciated.
i have a pot of money set aside to start the project off but if anyone has done a re-build on these and have a rough idea on how much my wallet will get hit then that would help too.
one last thing, i want to put my car on a rolling road to see what its putting out now before i take the ng engine out, does anyone know if there are any rolling road days planned in the midlands in the next few months?
    cheers all
    Darryl

I am sorry I don;t have any answers for you . But I am a new member I also have just bought a 90 quattro 20v and thought i would like to put a cold air intake in place of the standard air box. I am told in Canada the best i can do is to put a K and N air filter in the existing air box. I would like to know if you find different. I was also thinking that a inproving the exhaust flow would be another way of getting a bit more power. (what if I remove the catalitic converter) Theres something on ebay called a juice box sounds like a scam 10 to 15 horsepower for about 30 dollars. (they say its just a resistor) Lots of positive resp and a few saying scam. What do you think . Canuck John

Whats the induction kit on the 10v? How much would you be looking for?

Also what mods did you do to your 10v? Any advice would be appreciated.

Good luck with the engine swap, got a mate doing a 20v swap into an old 90 10v quattro (the box shape one).

as i said i have a 20v donor car ready to take to bits.

the 10v is running well for what it is, i had it re-mapped at the gti international show last summer by chipped uk and its given a gain of about 13bhp.
i have a jetex exhaust on the car but i havent removed the cat, there doesnt seem much point now.
and i also have the induction kit on it, which is made my pipercross. its an open filter on a metal framework which sits where the old filter box was. it was £80 when i got it, if i get £40 back for it i'll be happy. that wont be for a while yet though.
i'm think the car now has about a 20bhp increase on standard but i cant be sure as it hasnt been on a rolling road, it certainly feels a lot quicker.

i wont be using the cat on the 20v, and i wont be using any resistors from ebay! they're just a waste of money.
the donor car i got for £200 and its had a dozen owners and been sat for a few years getting mouldy! but its ideal for what i want it for and i will break the rest of it to sell on ebay when i'm done with it.

i have taken the quattro speedline alloys off it to sell on, its a set of five, with very good rubber on four but the spare needs a good refurb and a new tyre. any offers?

    cheers

You can make an adaptor, it needs to bolt up to the MAF sensor housing and have a tube on to take the filter of your choice. At this point you will have a hot air intake as the filter is sited above the exhaust manifold, you really should make an enclosure to keep the engine bay seperated from the filter which should have air fed from the front of the car.

    2. I'm going to strip the engine down, whats the likely cost/benefit ratio of maybe boring the block out? plus where can i source replacement parts if i go down that route?

You can't bore out much more, only about 1mm I think which only adds approx 60cc. You might consider a longer stroke crank, 92.8mm gets you a 2.5l engine, but to do this you need audi 6A/ACE or VW 9A (2L 16V) pistons. This crank comes from a VAG industrial engine (generator?) Eurospec in the US sells them.
There is also the 2.5 tdi crank, but at 95.5mm, this needs custom pistons, both longstroke cranks need the crankcase area of the block fettled for clearance.

    3. are there any injector upgrades available for the 7a engine?
i've heard pros and cons on the stock injectors on these but would like some more info and opinions.

Patrick Carlier developed a set of adaptors for using GM LS1 (corvette) injectors in the 7A, these injectors are approx the same flowrate as the 7A injectors, Patrick was offering a chip with his kit (for early build cars only) 190hp. 034 motorsports bought the US rights to these adaptors. They refined the design and dyno tested various injectors and now offer a kit which gives approx 6 wheel hp increase (injectors and adaptors only).

    4. i'm pretty sure i will get the head port and polished, has anyone any experience on doing these 20v heads.

I don't know of anyone that advertises Audi 5 cyl 20v tuning, but anyone that does 16v VW's could do it. May be worth trying Crasher (on here)? Another option is upgrading the valves, 034motorsports have 0.5mm oversize valves which give a modest improvement just with recut seats. Their UK distributor is Quattronics

    5. are there any other mods that are worth looking at while the engine is apart, ie. manifolds etc. It would probably be worthwhile to match the inlet manifold to the intake ports. For the exhaust try to get the tubular type manifold if yours is a late build donor which comes with the cast iron one.

I'm not going to start on this for a few months but the more research and advice i can get now will be much appreciated.
i have a pot of money set aside to start the project off but if anyone has done a re-build on these and have a rough idea on how much my wallet will get hit then that would help too.

My brother refurbished his 20v a few years ago now, even then the piston rings were approx £200, you might want hydraulic tappets £100-150, gaskets /stretchbolts £80 crank bearings £60? All of the tuning upgrades above come in very expensive, kind of foolish to spend that much on a coupe unless it's for keeping a long time.

one last thing, i want to put my car on a rolling road to see what its putting out now before i take the ng engine out, does anyone know if there are any rolling road days planned in the midlands in the next few months?

I think chipped UK do power runs?

    cheers all

cheers scotty thats a fair amount of info i've got to chew on there.

i dont think i'll bother with the block work, $1500 or so for a new block is more than i want to spend really but the 034motorsport website is very interesting!
i'll certainly be investing in the injectors and a few other bits i think.

there is a member of club audi in yorkshire who made his own injector system but i havent spoken to him yet so i'm not sure what he did.

if i have any other questions nearer the time i'll keep you all posted.
    cheers
