This was previously the reason for coking up of the manifold and exhaust gas recirculation valve which is part of the 'throttle body' as you put it. This butterfly valves only function is to shut off air to the turbo to enable a smooth shutdown of the engine. The current castrol edge 5w-30 should have sufficient resistance to heat and detergent properties to prevent carbon build up (and damage to cats) however it would be better not to have oil in the system at all and fit a catch tank instead. I hear that Allard has a simple 'power pipe' replacement for the entire EGR/throttle valve at £50 but I will have to phone and find out how this avoids the engine management warning light that results if you disconnect the vacuum form the top of the EGR unit-by the way the Gendan fault code readers do what it says on the tin and I have used mine sucessfully on vws and seats as well. EGRs probably contribute to pollution rather than the other way round (after 30K anyway) so i will get rid of mine if i can and fit an oil catch tank.
What about making a DIY catch tank and just shoving 2 small pipes in the holes were the oil comes out and either putting the other ends of the pipes down to the bottom of the engine bay or putting them into a container.

I was a Audi today having the plenum mod done and I asked if they could have a look at the oil problem and they recommend a new EGR valve and gaskets, will this work.
