Righty then as it says I have oil in them but there is also oil in the breather pipe that goes from the top of the cam cover to the air filter pipe to the turbo so is this a common problem and is it likely to be the breather.

The oil comes from the turbo seals, there is nothing to worry about as long as there aint masses of it. Most Tdi do it especially the PD's.

there is quite a bit and its coming out of the blow off valve and there is a bit in the throttle body. Is it normal to for the oil to come from the breather pipe.

These egines do not appear to burn oil in the normal sense, that is bypassing the piston rings but as far as i can see it all goes through the crankcase ventilation pipe from the rocker cover then through the induction /intercooler/ manifold. This was previously the reason for coking up of the manifold and exhaust gas recirculation valve which is part of the 'throttle body' as you put it. This butterfly valves only function is to shut off air to the turbo to enable a smooth shutdown of the engine. The current castrol edge 5w-30 should have sufficient resistance to heat and detergent properties to prevent carbon build up (and damage to cats) however it would be better not to have oil in the system at all and fit a catch tank instead. I hear that Allard has a simple 'power pipe' replacement for the entire EGR/throttle valve at £50 but I will have to phone and find out how this avoids the engine management warning light that results if you disconnect the vacuum form the top of the EGR unit-by the way the Gendan fault code readers do what it says on the tin and I have used mine sucessfully on vws and seats as well. EGRs probably contribute to pollution rather than the other way round (after 30K anyway) so i will get rid of mine if i can and fit an oil catch tank.

I use 5W40 and it does it on mine. 0W30 will be more likely to do it because it is thinner.

I have never seen it oozing out of mine. The whole shut off valvle and EGR are very clean. I've used 5w40 for many years and have been told that this can 'help' with this over oiling. I'm not saying 5w40 is a better oil to use, just what I have read. I do believe that regular oil changes are what these engines would prefer. I'm no fan of the same gunked oil being in there for 2 years.

There is also the case for reducing the EGR cycle which I have done on mine through vagcom. Quite a few on this forum have disconnected and bunged the pipe that operates the EGR. I did try this and had zero smoke from the car even when driven hard. Trouble I had was a spooling turbo. I was think that on tickover, the air normally passing through the EGR was bypassing and spooling the turbo. I didn't fancy shutting the engine down with it spinning.. Others have been fine with it though!!!
