I've got a 52 PD 130 TDI Golf and as soon as I switch the engine on the cooling fans switch on straight away. They stay on till i switch the engine off. Surely they should kick in once the temperature gets too hot only? I think it might be a temperature gauge sensor. Can anyone help?

    Thanks Very Much

    I noticed that too.

The fans mounted on the front radiator come on as soon as the engine is on. I’ve got a 52 PD150 Golf.

I don’t know if it’s right or not though. I’m sure some knowledgeable fellow will enlighten us shortly.

The fans will come on as soon as the air con is switched on. If the air con is left on when you switch the ignition off, it will be on as soon as you switch on again. Thats probebly why the fans are on when the engine is cold.

They will run if you have climate and you keep it in Auto mode too. If they are running really fast though all the time and don't vary their speed, then you need a new fan unit. It is quite a common fault on the Mk4...

Sounds like the temp sender has failed and the fans will run all the time as a fail safe so the car doesn't over heat.
