    Golf gt tdi 130 mk4..

It looks like a big splash plate/sort of protection for the bottom of the engine.

Basically i'm missing 3 or 4 of whatever fixes this to the frame.

Will there be a thread waiting (so then it's just a case of getting bolts) or is it a self-tapper job?

Don't bother fixing it just remove it.

Tryed loads of stuff to keep mine up but it always managed to hang loose after a month or so.

Its there to reduce outside noise and supposed to aid cooling of the engine.

I cannot tell the difference TBH.

One of the times it came down on mine and ended up caught up on the ns wheel I was on the motorway at the time and it could have caused a blow out as it damaged the inside wall of the tyre.

I read a few other forums at the time for the same advice your asking for and the general opinion was remove it.

With the amount of speed humps and how low the MK4 platform is it's only a matter of time before it comes down again.

If you've gotta have it consider fitting new side mounts and the main engine shield.

just remove it as its only there to reduce road noise. it also makes it harder to change the oil.

I'm still reluctant to remove it though. Gonna have a bash at fixing it proper tomorow, if I can't then i'll remove it.

    Cheers boy.

Mine came loose as well and i had it reattched twice but it kept coming loose and scraping over humps. I could even hear the wind blowing on it on the motorway (couldn't have been good for fuel consumption). Anyway i removed it last week and i dont regret it. No more scraping noises and i cant notice any difference in road noise etc

The plastic tray has about 8 or so torx (T20 size I think) screws dotted around the outside of it. The are several lips on the front part the tray, that then slides into the bodywork at the front of the car. Honestly can't remember whether the screws have an additional metal clip thing that hooks onto the body or whether they screw straight into a threaded type hole.

Nevertheless, I'd tend to agree that the tray is there for a reason. Probably to stop muck splashing up into the engine bay and to protect the aluminium sump from road debris.

    Cheers mate.

Ok, now for the silly question..

Would any of you do work under just a jack? To be honest I don't think it's the best idea, my mates grandfather has a pit I used to use, but thats a no go for 2 weeks as the wrinkly is in Teniriffe.

Not silly at all, but a genuine safety question. A pit or a ramp is the ideal facility to have.

When I do an oil change, I jack the car up on one side, whack two breeze blocks in next to the jack. This lets me get underneath the car without me worrying about meeting St Peter too early. Then I can remove the screws and then the sump plug. Anyway, then lowering the car back down allows me to continue with the work. Little bit of hassle, but peace of mind included. You could buy a set of axle stands from ********* too. As long as you don't mind lying on your back to work underneath the car, that should be sufficient.
