HI I'm looking at a 1.4 cl and noticed the clutch is very heavy to operate. Is this a sign of a problem or just the way they are. Its a 93 with 65K on the clock but there is no slipping just heavy operation.

    cheers

No its a best guess but if the plates aren't slipping it has to be the mechanics of the thing.

How much is a good price the best I've got so far is 150 quid

    150 for the clutch?

I've seen them going on eBay for 109 - 130

    Sounds about right.

Thats kinda my point bud - theres no real way of telling what the problem is without getting the gearbox off. Telling you 'the splines need stripping' apart from not really making sense, is just leading you up the garden path.

The splines only really bugger up if some muppet has put copper slip on them thinking its a high temp grease which its not. If the clutch has been in there from new, 99% sure they'll be fine.

If you pedal is creaking, it could be a pedal issue not clutch. Get the pedal looked at/changed first - its a much cheaper and faster job

If youre buying from euro car parts - make sure they dont supply a 'Transmec' brand in a black and green box. Theyre not original equipment. As long as its a brand luk/valeo/sachs theyre practically the same in the boxes.

Hi I've just spotted you're a clutch specialist so here's all the symptoms. The clutch is very heavy with a creak from the pedal that drives me nuts.

The bite is quite near the top but not all the way and doesn't slip at all but the clutch pedal seems to sit a bit higher than the brake inside the car.

Reverse seems to be a bit tricky sometimes and crunches about 50% of the time I try to engage it. The car has 62K on the clock and I have no idea if the clutch was ever changed. Any ideas??????
