I had my 02 130Tdi checked out at my local "trusted" garage and after a thorough going over I was advised that my centre silencer had seen better days as was more than likely the source of the noise, or "engine resonance" That has afflicted mine. I have exhausted, er the other alternatives like the air box or battery cover on the bonnet.

However when the first one they ordered turned up it looked nothing like the one on the car. So they sent it back and have ordered another 2 ! from a different supplier to make sure they get the right one, as there where two listed and they could return the unneeded one.

They quoted £80 for the exhaust + vat. When they phoned VW for a quote on the original part they where told it was £200 !!!!!!!

The question is, can you get this part of the exhaust from some where else apart from VW.

And why is the VW one £200 ??? are VW taking the mick ?

The VW one will probably be a much better quality one in a convoluted clamshell design ,

it will last longer and be quieter, an aftermarket one will be oval can design and will rust on the seams and sound tinny and raspy. It's not a VW thing all makes are like this, even the same exhaust manufacturers make an OE exhaust and an aftermarket one. Have you tried Eurocarparts and GSF?

Iv'e Tried GSF. The issue I am having is that they don't seem to be able to say if its oval or clamshell. Hence why the garage has ordered a few in. This does not bode well though.

You could always replace it with a piece of mandrel bent pipe.

Sound levels should not increase too much.

So is VW the only source of the "clam shell" type silencer ? I am now worried that if the ones they ordered are the oval type then I could end up with a noisier system !! and will just have to fork out for the VW unit.
