I'm about to collect a hardly-used Golf 1.4 - reg March 03, 12,500 miles, full VW service history.

I'm looking at the handbooks inc the one entitled "Service Schedule" - and I'm completely foxed (Maybe its my age, but I don't think this deserves the crystal mark!).

Currently I have an Astra with a 20k mile service interval - I do 20k miles per year, so I change the oil twice a year. I used to have a Cavalier with a 10k service interval - so I did 3 oil changes per 20K. All using Castrol Magnatec. Cambelt change intervals were clearly shown, so were done at the shown intervals.

But how on earth can I tell how often I should change the oil in the Golf, and what I should use?

And - all I can find about the cambelt is "Inspect at 60k miles, then every 30k miles" - which doesn't mean a great deal to me.

Can anyone clear the fog please, or provide a link to clear information?

    Much appreciated - ****.

    Hi,

in depence what engine you have:
with code QG0/2 - fixed service interval - 9000km/1 year
    QG1 - flexible service interval - 18000km/2 years ( have to use long-life oil - e.g. Castrol EDGE VW 504 00/507 00).

Cambelt you have to change in 56000miles/90 000 km!

That's good thanks - a little clearer now.

Its fixed service interval I've since found, so that's straightforward.

Cambelt - is it 56,000 miles whatever, or 56,000 miles/xx years?

Some people saying that after 4-5 years you should change cambelt even if you have less than 56000 miles.

In my case I have changed my cambelt after 44 000 miles and 5 years - anyway cambelt looked alright - without any cracks.
