    Hi,
I need some guidance and hints, just bought a second hand passat tdi se,1999, and need some pointers on a couple of problems/faults,the first is when I start up I get a beep and the temp light stays on until the car has warmed up, the second is no matter what I do I cant seem to get the blowers going, this model has the climate control and I was wondering if im having a blond moment and missing the obvious or whether it's a fuse etc.Any help would be really appreciated.I don't have a handbook either, are there any online references?

Don't know about the beeps, but the brushes on the blower motor are notorious for going, a little fiddly but they can be replaced at little cost with brushes of similar size.

    Hi,
Forgot to say I flushed the coolant and refilled it and now I don't get the beep or temp warning light, water was pretty brown and dirty.I have checked fuse 25 for the blower and thats fine.(the fuse hasn't blown and the blower still does'nt work)

Hi,I have been searching around various forums and theres a lot of talk about failing bushes on the blower motor itself causing the blower to stop completely, some people seem to take these bushes out and replace them can anyone tell me how to go about doing this???
    many thanks,
    emily

A little tricky, it involves removal of the glove box and working around the airbag, once the blower is out the brushes just need unsoldering and in with the new, I confess a friend, who is a skilled mechanic helped me.

    Hi Emily
If you want to take out the heater motor yourself then I would recommend getting the haynes manual as I did. You will need a socket set with extension bars and I found that a screwdriver and bit set with a flexible extension drive invaluable as it meant that i did not have to remove the passengers airbag completely, but only had to remove the two bolts securing the left hand airbag bracket to the bulkhead (which would then waggle around allowing access to the top retaining screw on the motor housing cover with the flexible screwdriver).
When you have got the housing out, pull the motor out of the housing (held in by rubber bushes - which you can push out with a screwdriver). The brushes are retained by two metal clips, when you have undone these pull out the bushes and rotate them 180 degrees and put them back in.
This has worked for me, so good luck!

There are plenty of treads on this forum regarding this annoyingly common problem. I have also sufferd the same problem but took the coward's way out and replaced the whole motor with a brand new one purchased off ebay. It is a fiddly job, the biggest pain being one phillips head screw at the top of the motor/fan housing - I chose not to remove or even loosen the airbag this just ment it was a bit tricky to pull the blower unit out of the housing.

    Hi Doc,
I got mine from a friend who had access to loads of different sizes.
My suggestion would be to remove and take one with you to a washing machine/repair center and compare what they have available, or even the local scrapyard.
    Paul.
