Audi 2.5 A6 diesel What do I buy

Please can someone guide me. I am looking for an Avant diesel probably auto but am limited to a £4500 budget as it is my second car. I am very confused abut the HP of the 2.5 engines are there any I should avoid. Also some seem to be very high milage 150,000 apart from the obvious do turbos give up around then or are these engines good for a lot more. Also there seems to be a different steering wheel at around 1999 should I avoid one version or is it all much of the same.

You should be far more worried by the automatic gearboxes than the turbo or engine. I know someone who currently has a 1999 A6 2.5 TDI manual and has done 140k in it from new. It still has the original engine, turbo and gearbox. But there are a lot of horror stories about the Multitronics (automatics). My advice would be to buy a Tiptronic if possible, but when it works the Multitronic is a much nicer gearbox. If you buy a Multitronic, change the transmission oil regularly, say every 30k or less to reduce risk to the gearbox.
