VW Golf 1.4S 16v Camshaft Sensor Problem
    Hi

My 98 Mark 4 Golf 1.4 S 16v is showing a diganostics problem Camshaft Position Sensor Earth to Ground, also there is lack of power at low revs and a dip in power at 2000 - 2300 rpm, above 2500 rpm it goes like the clappers, can anyone help me to resolve this problem.

I have changed the ignition coil and the camshaft sensor.

Hi Since you have replaced the sensor and with the reading you are getting i would imagine there is something wrong with the wiring. To check the sensor properly it needs to be scoped

How do you do this and can I get the wiring checked?. There are 3 wires going to the Sensor and then they join into the loom.

Hi You have to ohm the wires give me your engine code and i will tell you were and how to check them. Most modern workshops have equipment to scope components, however i think you should consentrate on the wires.

If the fault is electrical, the two common places to look are the earth connections, one under the battery (there should be several connections) the other is under the scuttle panel in front of the engine e.c.u

however the camshaft sensor could be detecting that the camshaft and crankshaft aren't in perfect timing with each other. i.e the cambelt is a bit slack.

how long ago was it changed? or has it (i say "it" but it actually has two)

i know im swearing when i say vauxhall, but they suffer with camshaft sensor faults, normally being down to the cambelt.

That's very interesting I bought the car in June last year and I was told the Timing belt was replaced. I have been told that if you don't replace the complete Timing belt kit (belt & tensioners) this could throw up this problem.
