    Hi,

Ive recently experienced a problem with my A4 1.9 tdi se. Its a 1999 model, and just in the last few weeks, whenever I go to lock/unlock my car, there are no indicators flashing, but they used to do this. I have checked the fuses, and thought it may be down to a relay, as the bulbs arent blown, as they work when using my hazard lights. Would it be possibly down to a low battery in the key fob? Not too sure where to start, as there are no pointers. Any help appreciated greatly. Thanks

This may indicate that your alarm is not arming.

Are the ultrasonic sensors still activating?

You could try the 'low tech/eejit' way of testing it.

Sit in the car and arm the alarm, you must remain perfectly motionless (mebe hold breath) for at least 30seconds, if you move the alarm will not arm.

After this time the led flashes should change, and the alarm should activate when you move. lol

ive tried the low tech method of sitting in the car really still and trying to activate the alarm, but the status doesnt seem to change. The led on the door pins still flash as per normal . BTW i just had my battery changed as it was flat, is that anything to do with it?

Also, I noticed my key fob was getting less and less responsive (had the car over 2 years since I bought it) so I figured batteries were knackered and replaced them. Now the response is better I can lock from a distance. But one problem, the indicators still dont flash so i cant visually tell if the car is locked or not. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have already checked fuses and bulbs and at my wits end.

You need to check the system for problems with vagcom or a garage diagnostic tool, and also see what the central locking number is set to.

Thanks for the response. If I get it diagnosed, is there a number that the central locking should be set to? I hope the system isnt damaged, as it looks as though its armed (flashing leds next to door pins when locked), but no flashing from the indicators from outside as per normal. I noticed this happened since I had my battery changed. I will get a VAGCOM reading done on the weekend if poss and report back. thanks and let me know if you have any more info for me. cheers.

the number it is set to depends on other configurations for the alarm, eg set to beep when arm.

look at ross tech/vag com website and in the wiki there is some info on how the codes are made up.

or if you can get the number, i can try and get the info for you. it varies a bit so it's not quite that simple.

eg say mine is 1447, then i might add 2 to the number to trigger another feature, then -4 off the number to remove another feature. if yu get what i mean?

infact here is the info as an example:

    35-Central Locks: -- KWP-1281
VAG-COM Works fine (note: pre-'97 A4's may not have this module).

    Recode locking options

    [Select]
    [35 - Cent. Locks]
    [Recode - 07]
    Enter the coding below
    [Do It!]

Write down the existing coding for future reference.

A4 pre-1998 with Delta radio and anti-theft system
    Standard Coding: 03468

A4 pre-1998 with Delta radio, anti-theft system and keyless entry
    Standard Coding: 12172

    A4 1998+ with Concert/Symphony radio and anti-theft system
    Standard Coding: 03340

    S4, A4 1998+ with Concert/Symphony radio, anti-theft system and keyless entry
    Standard Coding: 16140

Add the following options to your coding number:

+64 Windows up, sunroof close, and windows down with remote.
-04 One touch unlock of all 4 doors and trunk
-1024 Remove horn honk when arming
+32 Auto lock/unlock of doors (Doors lock at 15 mph and unlock when key is removed)

So, if you want to have a 1999 A4 with Concert radio and anti-theft system and keyless entry, and you want to add window control with the remote along with auto-lock, then:
    add 03340+64+32= 03436
1998 A4 1.8T Sport - with slightly above average engine mods.

    Hi K3t4n,

Just wondering whether you ever got to the bottom of this problem, because I have the same issue (plus the interior lights don't work at all).

    Thanks
