I have a Golf Mk41.8t and am wondering if what im experiencing is turbo lag? When i accelerate hard in first (6000 rpm or so) and then shift to second, there seems to be a pause for about a second or so before i feel the turbo 'kick in' again. is this normal? its a 2002 model (AUM) and has done 100k. I believe that turbo lag is when there are not enough exhaust gasses to pass the turbo threshold, so if i am constantly accelerating, should i experience turbo lag as the revs in second gear should be past the point at which the turbo 'kicks in'? If this is the case, what could be causing it?

Yeah sounds normal. You will get some lag, as when you change gear and take your foot off of the loud pedal, all the boost that the turbo was giving will be lost and it has to boost up again. It may be worth checking your diverter valve as they have been known to fail and leak boost pressure...
