Help Please !

Hi All !
I am currently driving a 2001 VW Golf 1.6 16V with 42,000mls
My problem is that I am hearing a fast ticking noise from the front of the car, to be more precise, it is around the area of the expansion tank bottle.
It is noticable while sitting stationary and at speed ( Up to 70mph )
Should I worry ?

is it deff coming from the expansion
is there water in the expansion
does it overheat?

Thanks for getting back to me.
There doesn't appear to be any direct problem with the expansion tank. Water level etc all fine.
Around the area of the expansion bottle there is a few other chambers, I am not sure what they are for, but it seems to be coming from one of those chambers.
It is like a fast ticking noise which can be heard from the area when the car is stationary with the bonnet open, and also when i am heading down the motorway at about 60/70 with the drivers window down.
I explained this to my local ex VW mechanic who says that this is normal, though to be honest I have my doubts.
Sorry I cant give you more detail, I am not mechanicly minded.
