wawenwong I think your absloutely right especially when marco34 is confirming Im really greatful for your advice. Also the noise is definetly 'metallicy'

Ive also had remap done on my audi with 184 bhp and 270lbs torque. amazing power. Saying this, this is not the cause as i had this noise before the remap. Ive come across this site that does remanufactured turbo's www.midlandturbo.com they have priced them at £345 for my car.
Whats the difference between a remanufactured and a reconditioned turbo? dont feel too comfortable buying off ebay rather go to a reputable company

If my car was'nt fully loaded i probably would have sold it, but on the other hand my audi is fitted with the RNSE full screen sat nav, bluetooth, leather, red ambient lighting, xenons and the economy is great. Ive added a few extra's to spice it up a little.... 18"RS6 alloys, spoiler and a remap.
I dont think i'll get another with the same or better spec so best to invest! what do you think??

The only thing that concerns me about replacing a turbo is the actuator for the variable vanes. Am I write in thinking the setting is critical? I would have thought different turbos would require setting, allbeit the same model.

If I'm off the mark here, please let me know.

    Cheers

I would have thought it was a very careful straight swap

Can anyone shed some light on this (actuator settings) Dont really fancy blowing my new turbo.

Also is it possible to fit a larger turbo for more power.... or am i pushing the limit?

Remove the actuator arm off the linkage....... and then measure very carefully..... the distance that remains to put it back on the linkage.

Adjust your new Turbo to suite.

If you like your A4 to be reliable just accept the 180bhp remap that you have! Ive done at least 40K on mine with no problems at all to go any further is inviting hassle filled motoring.

Your right there wahwenwong. I've been reading about it in a magazine. It seems careful replacement is the key.

wahwenwong - I checked the turbo today. I removed the large air pipe leading to the turbo from the air filter box, there is a small spindle that attaches to the propeller, what i found was there was about 1mm play on the spindle, I used a small mirror to see if i could see any scratches where the propeller might be catching but there was nothing to indicate this. Also the fins on the propeller showed no damage at all. Stumped as i thought this was the cause

Firstly am i checking the correct part of the turbo?

Secondly is the 1mm play at the spindle normal?

Well you have checked the inlet side of the turbo fasttdi which sounds about perfect (play), did you push it in and out aswell? cause there is a thrust bearing too!............but the variable vanes are on the exhaust side + there is a bearing on the exhaust side , try and have a check there.......if the problem is carbon build up and not bearings then you may be able to clean it while you have it dismantled........good luck and cheers

Yes pushed the spindle in and out too and no play there at all. I ordered some product off Innotec. apparently alot of people have cured their turbo problems with this product. Its called 'Turbo clean' and is a three step treatment. Im just waiting on delivery, but will keep you posted on how i get on. Thanks mate
