  1. ABS light comes on after 3K rpm

    Hi All,

i just had a replacement engine fitted to my 98 A4. It came from a 00 Bora, and so far it performs reasonably well. However I do have two problems that are causing concern

    (1) ABS light comes on once the car goes over 3K rpm, and I can feel the ABS shutting off, the car gives a slight jolt which I feel through the steering wheel- any ideas why this would be happening?

    (2) The turbo is leaking, the mechanic thinks that the seals might just be gone. (the reason for the engine change was I put too much oil in and it destroyed the old engine). How long and how expensive should it be to replace the seals? Is it possible that there could be more damage done than just the seals being gone?

    All help appreciated.

Just a thought but is it possible that the oil spurting from the turbo could spill on to the wheels causing them to spin thus activating the ABS?

hi, only offering my opinion as i don't have the knowledge of vw that others have. i believe that the "esp",stability program, is linked to the "abs" and was just wondering which vehicles electronic system was used in the engine change.
i would suppose that you kept the audi system, but don't know what bits you would have interchanged between engines,or the effect, if any, that that would have had,but first thoughts would be a "miss match" of some kind with the sensors/ecu?or components such as the abs brake pump etc.

as regards the "turbo leaking", how do you know that it's leaking? does it leak externally, on to the engine/ground, or have you been into the intercooler pipes and found oil in there?
external leakage could only come from the oil feed pipe, or drain, but most likely feed.
internal, into the intercooler would be through the internal turbo seals,or could be simply the normal c**p that gets fed into there from the breather system.
if more damage had been done to the turbo, then certainly the vanes on one,or both sides would be goosed, perhaps not easy to see with ceramic wheels, not saying you should go to this extreme, but the only way to check the lift on the bearings is to get a hand on BOTH sides of the turbo shaft. poking your finger in only one end doesn't work, because as you lift one side, the other side drops giving the wrong indication of excessive lift. both ends of the shaft must be lifted together.however, the wheels should not touch the housing they revolve in.
probably no help at all, but it got her away to bed!
first time i was up a ladder i was down a well
    4th cog,--two to go

Regarding the leaking, the mech pointed to a little pipe slightly below the engine on the drivers side and showed me where the oil was coming out of, he said this was the Turbo, and I took him at his word. I will take a picture tomorrow.

Thanks for the info on the ABS being linked to the ESP I will mention this to the mechanic tomorrow. Thanks for your feedback.

Hi your oil leak is coming from the copper seal which is under the union on whch the oil pipe is connected to.The seal has been disturbed when the engine was replaced.I would think your ABS problem was more related to the speed of your vechial, and not your engine speed????You will need to check the signals from the ABS sensors in measured value blocks.

Problem fixed and car is running good. I finished fitting my aftermarket stereo unit today too. All that is left to do now is to fit the aftermarket central locking pump when it comes. Don't worry I am sure I will be looking for help there too. PS anyone know how to get the oil stains off my cobble locked driveway?

Here are some pics of the car now that it is finished.

The oil is there from after the new engine fit and before the replacement oil to turbo connector. Car is running very smooth now and no more oil leak.

BUT... the ABS light is still coming on at motor-way speed and stays on until the engine is turned off and on again. All help appreciated on this, can someone tell me what exactly this means "I would think your ABS problem was more related to the speed of your vechial, and not your engine speed????You will need to check the signals from the ABS sensors in measured value blocks."
