    Oil cooler for sure

VW/Audi have bee using a oil cooler/oil temp stabiliser for years I had a 1983 VW Van with one,My Golf MK1 1990 had one.It sits between the oil filter and the oil filter housing and has a water jacket made of alloy. the water eats away at the jacket and then mixes the oil and water. Very common problem.

The reason is that conventional oil cooler can over cool the oil, when what is required is a stable oil temperature to get the best results. A standard oil cooler is fine on a car driven hard all the time as your just trying to keep it from cooking

So, rather than an oil cooler, it is more of an oil warmer/oil temp stabiliser? That must mean that water does in fact go to the oil 'cooler'. Now it makes sense...
    It's an oil cooler problem.

If the cooling system has had a fair bit of oil in it chances are that the thermostat and and switches may need replaced due to contamination.
You said that you flushed the system did you use a proper cleaner ie one by FORTE /COMMA or similar that is designed to fully clean and flush the system to remove all the oil from the radiator and all the waterways.
Try that before you panic too much and then add a new genuine thermostat.
The problem may lso have caused some fault codes to be logged by the ecu (due to spurious readings from contaminated switches )which are setting off the warning lights.
