Hi, I'm currently getting hugely stressed by a high pitched whining noise that sounds like its coming from the passenger side front wheel. It isn't constant and only starts after about 30mins of driving. It doesn't occur when I'm driving in a straight line but the slightest deviation to the left causes it. I'm thinking it might be either the wheel bearing or something to do with the brakes as it stops when I apply the brakes. I've been advised that the pads are a little low and the disc on that corner has a ridge on the inside braking surface. Any suggestions or advice would be gratefully received. Thanks.

I would go for fitting new brake pads if they are low. check the discs for wear, if they are below the manufacturers specs fit new discs as well. If they are still within the limits, take off the wear lip before re-fitting the new pads.

But is that likely to be causing the noise? Do you think that buying pads and discs off ebay is risky? There seem to be some pretty good prices on there.

The fact that when you touch the brake the noise goes would suggest to me that it points to the brakes. Wheel bearings usualy make a drumming noise that comes on at a certain speed, unless it is compleatly dry of grease but then you would think you would hear it all the time. As far as pads & discs from e-bay I can not comment, you pay your money and take your chance. I believe you get what you pay for.

That was what I thought. A friend suggested wheel bearings but kwik fit said they seemed fine when they serviced it as I asked them to check them. However I trust them about as much as I'd trust Gary Glitter as a babysitter. I'll get the brakes done and go from there. Discs and pads seem to be about £50 on the bay, how bad can they be?!

Well I had the new discs and pads fitted yesterday and the noise is still there! Just to confirm, what should the warning that the pads are low sound like? I've got a 180 mile drive next friday and I'll probably kill myself if I can't get it sorted by then!

jack the front end up and check the front wheels for excessive movement. one hand top and bottom.if thier is any movement you may get away with tightening
the hub nut until it's gone.

Hub nut? Sorry, I'm a bit special when it comes to cars! I'm assuming that would require the wheel to be taken off?

it may be easier if the wheel is taken off. right in the centre you will find a tin hub cap. knock
a screwdriver in around the outside and tease it out until it falls off.you will find the hub nut inside.
