I havn't posted in a while as i am undecided about what to do to get my 1300 golf back on the road.I know exactly what im doing looks wise but i want a bit more power under the bonnet. From what i can gather dropping a GTI engine into it wont be the easiest job in the world as its an injection and i dont have anywhere to store a donner car anyway, so i think i can just rule it out. What i am thinking now is would a 1.6/1.8 Driver engine suit better since it has a carb and wont need wiring loom.????????Another problem im having is that mine only has a 4 speed box.Has anyone got ideas on what the best option is in getting a 5 speed one.are they universal in the sense that if i get one to suit the 1300 will it suit the driver engine.Any help will be appriciated.

I still think the money you will spend trying to change the engine will buy you a MK2 golf with the right engine in

The five speed 085 series (yours is an 084) is a very easy conversion if you can find one. An ideal code box is an 8N. Don't do an engine swap, it isn't worth it.

The 8N is one of quite a few different boxes you could use and it was used in the Golf 2 and in the Polo up to 85. It would be possible to use the box from a Golf 3 or Polo 6N as well but the ratios would not be as suitable in some of them but they would be with others, that was when my head started hurting!

The Polo type 80 (up to 94, what people incorrectly call a Mk3 Polo) 1.3 5 speed used the AHZ, AFA, 8P, AKY, CEM, CEG, CEH, AHD and CEL and all these would work. If you find a Golf 2 with an 8N, then the box, linkage and mount are a straight swap but a Polo 80 box would need selector rod guide 191 711 211 A £20.16, shift finger 191 711 233 £13.13 and top support bracket 191 199 358 D £22.87.

If you find a box, run the code past me. The code is stamped on top of the box on the bell housing mounting flange directly below the distributor.
