    hey all, i have a 2000 A3 1.8T and the engine temperature gage only works intermittantly. does anybody know what could be the cause of the problem? Is it something i should be worried about? cheers

    Could be as simple as a faulty sender or a bad connection in the engine bay at the sender unit.
    Maybe one of our more experienced members could make a better suggestion.

    Usual answer is renew coolant temp sensor which sends signal to both guage and ecu.

    A very common problem on some VAG's is a "green" 4 pin temp switch, this may be your problem.

    Yep,thats the one.Have changed before on last car -98a4avant(afn)but for over fueling problem. Like you say-common problem

    my a4 has been doing it 2 ,took sensor out today and the pins were not clean had corrosion on so cleaned it and put it back on, seems to be ok now

    I have a 2002 A4 with a tempremental guage. Sometimes its quarter the way up, somtimes at 50, somtimes in the correct position of 90 deg c. Is it safe to detach the sensor plug and have a look. Just curiouse about it upsetting the ECU.

    i usually get me temp gage coming on if the coolant level is low. sound obvious but worth checking if you have a leak somewhere
