The coolant Temp/Level lamp occasionally starts to flash when starting the engine. The car is cold so it can't be over temp so I assumed that the level was low, it isn't.

I think this is most probably a sensor problem. If so how do I change it?

PS This is affecting our 1.4 2004 Twist Polo

We've had the same problem a couple of times on our 1.2 2002 Polo - the level is fine (firmly between the min & max and even up to or exceeding the max), the engine is always cold when this happens... once or twice it's been extremely cold on frosty mornings and I wondered if it was some kind of basic "icy conditions" warning, but other times it happened in mild conditions.

Usually just stopping the engine and restarting cures it. What gives?

Try giving the sensor prongs in the header tank a scrape with a screwdriver to clean them up.

I eventually changed the header tank. Costs about £14, no more problems.
